89 Miles
Now, about the “89 miles” number. As you probably know, my site has had the “89 miles” shown on it since I launched. I did that because at the time, like I mentioned above, there wasn’t much to go on for accurate information. I was relying on estimated project timelines and then diving the total number of miles in a project over the entire time between today and the competition date (sometimes not known so I would just use the end of 2020). So for example, if a project like the San Diego Wall #3 started around February 2019 and I was guessing it would be done by December 2020, that gives the entire project about 22 months. This means in October 2019 the project would be about 40% complete. Now, of course that’s not how these projects work. Sometimes it takes time to get permits, approvals, etc or they have to screen the soil first before they can begin. All that to say, my “miles built” number was inaccurate. Not long after I launched did CBP decide to start providing more updates and I believe the latest number they put out was 75 miles. At this point, I’m stuck between “updating” my number down to 75 miles which is the official confirmed number or waiting until CBP “catches up” to my number and then updating it. Obviously nobody wants to see the number go DOWN, that would be weird. So I think I will just keep it at 89 until CBP “catches up” and then begin updating it more frequently. Like I said, I did not know CBP would start providing updates like they did or else I would have just done that from the beginning. I apologize for the confusion!
